From failure comes determination

Of course, it’s easy to be philosophical about this as it all went to poop because of illness, not because I failed. But I still failed Quick recap. Scottish Indoor Champs 2015. I won it. (Wooo!) The guy who came third told me I was quite close to the world record. And so a plan was born. I gave myself a year to train hard – then try to break the world record at this year’s competition. Along the way I learned a lot, changed a lot, joined a new team,…

I’m still here. Don’t panic

It’s a long story. One that will come indie time.  Still training. Still pushing. Still looking forward. It’s just taking a little time to put together thoughts for the last year.  If you haven’t already signed up for Rowvember, do it. Download LiveRowing to your iPhone and get rowing.

1K @ North East Scotland Indoor Rowing Champs. A win’s a win…

This has the potential to make me sound like a bad winner – but I won the North East Scotland Indoor Champs last weekend for my event – but it was at a really slow time comparatively, so though I’m happy I won, I’m not happy in the slightest with my performance. I should be happy – I was the fastest lightweight, I was the second fastest on the day – but at 3:07.1 it’s slower than I’ve been in a while, and certainly miles away from where I need…

Why does the drunkest guy always work out the bill!?!?!

Don’t look for the punchline, it’s just an observation… and not really rowing related, though I’ll still waffle about that below… But I’ve just returned from a night out with friends, cheat night, off for a curry. Very nice too. But the bill came, and the guy who has had most to drink is the one looking after splitting 7 ways, working out a tip, deducting cash vs card and then working out change. Needless to say it took a while to resolve… Anyway, all good company, and an entertaining…

The powerful drive of Team Fitness Matters

Fitness Matters is an entirely different team to be part of. Free Spirits were just that. Free. There were those who were there for competition and those who were just part of the team to belong to a bigger hive – but paid no real attention to any kind of competition or challenge. Perfect for many, including me when I started.  But there is a sense of team responsibility that has developed since shifting to Fitness Matters. Whether it’s because I’m new there, maybe it’s because I want to make…

5k at DIRC in Exeter. Bringing home gold!

Technically it’s not gold – as there’s only 1 medal awarded for each event, but you get what I mean.   This weekend I flew to Bristol – and managed to travel down to Exeter for the Devon Indoor Rowing Championships. This late summer event is the 5k one (they had one in April this year too which was a 2k)  It almost went wrong right at the start. When I went to weigh in, I was 75.3kg. 300g too heavy! Stripped down to my underwear, and thankfully snuck under…

5k to kick off 3 rest days

It’s a busy week. I’m editing TV stuff for the One Show at the Edinburgh Festival – which means long days – and especially, not time for training.  Which is probably a good idea. I’ve not had a rest day for 10 days, and I’ve been hitting it hard for a couple of months now. If I can get a chance to do weights tomorrow night I may do – but otherwise, it’s three days rest.  A few things to catch up on though.   Firstly, the Concept 2 RowLympics…

Today: A bit of Pete and a CTC to remember

I could get used to being a house husband. Well, apart from the ironing. I’m not good at that. But I’ve taken time off work to look after the kids during the school holidays – which has been great fun.  This week however, they were both at daycare as they wanted to see their friends. So I’ve had the week to myself! Which meant today I could spend quality time on the erg.  Which meant:  1500 x 5 with 5 min rests between. Taken from the Pete Plan. Though my…

Today (part 2): 7x4mins of puddle creation by @FMPTExeter !!

Having already bagged a good hard interval session this morning, I figured this afternoon would be a good chance to do some “leave you on the floor” intervals. And what better way to do it than the Fitness Matters WOW. Easy: 7 x 4mins @24spm with 2min rest between each one. I was aiming for around 1:47 splits.  The first three I was able to hold on, but it all got a bit hot, sweaty and tough for the next three. The magic closing interval was there, boosted by the…

Today: Facebook Concept2 Monthly Challenge

Not an official Concept2 challenge. Just something that users have set up to give year round once a month competition. If you read yesterday’s post (really? You did?) you may remember I’d suggested today was going to be the CTC and is knee again forgo a 2kDay Friday 2000m. Well I felt quite bad about that, so as the C2 challenge incorporated a 2k interval, I thought I’d do that instead. PLUS avid followers of this blog will remember I’ve been playing Wii Bowling with my daughters recently. Hilariously, I’m…
